Updating hp media smart server
Those of you who have been following our Missing Remote Podcast are familiar with the dilemma I have been facing for the last few months--do I dare take the plunge on my one and only Windows Home Server system, based off of an HP Media Smart EX495, and upgrade to the new and "improved" WHS 2011?
After much deliberation and non-stop harassment from, well everyone, I decided it was time.
This week owners of the last-gen EX470 and EX480 series Media Smart Servers will be able to nab a DVD that updates their servers to the new 3.0 software currently available on the EX490 and EX495 models, including better Mac support and automatic media transcoding.
Unfortunately, this update isn't free: you'll have to pay for the privilege.
It still has the same media collecting, i Phone-streaming and transcoding software in previous models, but the Media Collector works a lot better on Macs now.
What is new is the dramatically more powerful machine and better OS X support.
Nearly anyone looking for a backup and central storage solution should be able to use this guy.
Instead of the stark WHS setup screen, new users can use HP’s software pack that guides them through setting up remote backups, assigning permissions to users, and finding media spread out over a network.
With 4 x 1.5TB of storage space, I was using approximately 2.5TB.
The latest builds also ditches low voltage, and low power, CPUs in favor of a 2.5 GHz Dual Core Pentium. I’ve been using WHS for a while now and it’s just not a backup device for me.
My torrent client lives on the box and un RARing huge files takes time on an Atom or Celeron processor, but the Pentium speeds things up a lot.
Now that a lot of us have WHS2011 running, whose who have a HP Media Smart Server are asking what to do with their now old machines.
So without further ado, those of you with a Media Smart can now install WHS2011 on it courtesy of ex HP employee Alex Kuretz of Media Smart HP Media Smart Server 3.0 Update 1 x64 is a program developed by Hewlett-Packard.
